Another bicycle stolen

Taken: 29 April 2005, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Remember my bicycle? I was patching the flat tire, beginning of this month. And last week, my bicycle got stolen (not from the location of the picture, though). So now I’m back to moving through Amsterdam on foot, or by public transport. Sigh.

Mumbling with an accent

Taken: 24 April 2005, Haarlem, The Netherlands.

The Netherlands, also known as Holland. It’s a small country in Europe with a population of 16.300.415. The official language is Dutch (Nederlands, not to be confused with German, or Deutsch). Even if the country is small, there’s a diversity of Dutch accents.

Now, English.

What are the most horrible English accents?
The French or German ones? Or American, Canadian or British?

What are the most funny English accents?
Scottish? Indian? Or American, Canadian or British?

Family reunion Ong Jap Lik, Haarlem 2005

Taken: 24 April 2005, Haarlem, The Netherlands. Making pictures of big groups is hard.

* About 200 people attended (including in-law’s and boyfriends/girlfriends).
* Descendants from Ong Jap Lik and his wife (first generation).
* Descendants from Ong Jap Lik’s 8 children were present.
* Most people present were from the 5th child, second most from the 1st child.
* Family spanning 3 or 4 generations were present.
* I’m one of the people of the 7th generation, related through my mum’s side.
* Most of the people attending were from the Netherlands.
* There were people from the United States, Belgium, Canada, Indonesia, Singapore, England and France.

I’ve seen a lot of familiar faces, but more new faces. I still have regular contact with a lot of my far cousins.

It’s all about money

Taken: 24 February 2005, Schiphol, The Netherlands.

Everything you want to know about the world, all the news that’s happening, the important things… all that matters. You see that all on TV, hear it on the radio, read it in the newspaper.

And all you see on TV, hear on the radio, read in the newspaper is all about money. Everything is sponsored. Advertisements everywhere. The media stopped reporting, and started creating news just to attract public, customers, advertisers.

Can’t forgive and forget, or accept the probability of accidents happen, but sue the hell out of everyone and everything. Insurance companies, laywers, waivers, contracts, documents, paperwork and paperwork. Criminals suing victims, the bad turn good, the good turn bad.

Taxes and fines that become tools to harvest money, not tools to keep the country going. We pay for using money: transaction costs, creditcards, bank accounts, exchange costs.

Don’t you want to get away from everything now and then?

Envy for joy

Taken: 2 April 2005, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

See also “Flying right in, and left out” and “Friction between singles and couples”.

So when I do hang out with my coupled friends, I now and then get mixed feelings (also because of what I described in my previous two posts).

Sometimes it’s jealousy. No, jealousy is too much. I guess it’s envy. Envy for what they have. If you know me, or if you’ve been reading my posts in the past years, then you probably know what I mean.

In the case it gets all lovey-dovey and I’m really the extra wheel (“hellooo, I’m still here”), then it’ll be frustration.

But on the other hand, I feel really glad for them. Happy for them that they finally found each other.

Friction between singles and couples

Taken: 2 April 2005, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

In continuation of the previous post (“Flying right in, and left out”).

When I read the comments and my own post again, I wondered this:
if I was attached, would I myself consider the situation (their feelings and whatever) of my single friends?

Probably not.

I’d probably be too involved in the thing… you know, being in love, being a couple, doing a lot of things together.

But knowing how it is to be single, and sometimes to feel left out when being surrounded by couples, I should also be aware of my single friends when I do get a girlfriend.

Right? That’s what you (will) do, too, right?

Flying right in, and left out

Taken: 4 April 2005, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
(Does anyone know the name of this bird?)

In one group of my friends, almost everyone is attached, engaged or married. Sure, I love them as my friends. But hey, third wheel, fifth wheel, seventh wheel. Totally useless when you only need two, four or six wheels. Totally left out like that extra wheel.

Do you have a group of friends like this?
Or have you ever felt like this?
Or are you one of the attached people?

Note: The stuff in the water aren’t worms. They are catkins (Dutch: katjes) of (I believe) the Corylus avellana tree (Dutch common name: Hazelaar).

Nature is proof of God’s existence

Taken: 4 April 2005, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

I might have already said something like this, but I don’t care. I’ll say it again if I have to. I love nature because it’s so beautiful. If not beautiful, then it is powerful, massive, great, immense, overwhelming, mysterious, elegant, incomprehensible.

Perfect.

It it reminds me everything of God.

That He created this.
The beautiful nature.
So immense, yet so close.
And that he made us.
You.
Me.

God bless you all.
